How we do it

Experience has taught us a few inconvenient truths about our work. Rather than wrestle with these, we’ve come to embrace them.

Working alone would save a lot of time and effort. Unfortunately, the collaborative tension of diverse perspectives and experiences keeps improving the work. Truth be told, we just can’t get enough of it.

We see ourselves as manuhiri in your whare. You bring your world. We bring ours. We talk. We test each other. We notice different things. Somewhere in the exchange, new possibilities emerge that neither of us would have arrived at alone.

We give up a little certainty and gain something we couldn’t have imagined ourselves. And because you’ve helped shape it, you understand the choices, believe in the direction and know how to carry it forward.

Good company makes a difference.

We’ve tried finding a repeatable formula. But people have an unfortunate habit of being themselves. Their language, story and aspirations tend to make a mess of anything prepared earlier.

We embrace bespoke. From the outset, our goal is to get to know you and your world, then let those particulars lead. We notice the words you use, the things you care about and the details that seem ordinary to you but make the work unmistakably yours.

We’re looking for that moment of recognition; something you’ve never seen that expresses something you’ve always known. You can speak for it without learning a script and use it without us there to explain it. That’s when it fits.

One size doesn’t fit all. We’ve stopped trying to make it.

The brief can be met while the opportunity is left hanging. A piece of work can tick every box and still leave everyone cold. We believe the world has enough mediocre work and half-hearted endeavours.

We want to make something people feel drawn to. Something they’re proud to share, pleased to encounter and want to keep in their world. That asks us to question work that would probably pass. To refine, rethink and sometimes start again.

Beauty, character and craft change how people respond. Nobody encounters the finished work thinking about how efficiently we met the brief. They feel whether it moves them, means something or deserves their attention.

We only produce work that we’re proud to release into the wild.

Our toxic trait is that we’re all in or nothing. We can’t help but get fully invested in the kaupapa and totally immersed in your world. That’s why our execution is always hands-on and you’ll deal directly with us.

We’re a small practice with a wide repertoire. We’ve built it that way so you work directly with the people making it happen. What we learn from you stays with the work. The detail you cared about in our first conversation still matters in the final decision.

As a nimble practice, we get the luxury of only bringing in the people we trust and whose work we rate. The team takes its shape from what your project needs. It works well because those on your team have chosen to be there, not been told to be there.

Small lets us be particular about what and who we take on.
